Renew your car licence at the Post Office
Gauteng motorists can now renew their motor vehicle licenses at selected Post Offices in the province. This partnership between the Gauteng Department of Roads and Transport and the Post Office is an effort to take the services to the people while improving service delivery to communities.
Motorists must produce a printed renewal notice and an ID book to renew a motor vehicle licence. If they do not have a renewal notice, motorists can complete the relevant documentation for the license to be processed.
This initiative is in phase one; phase two will culminate into the expansion of other National Road Traffic Act services.
Among others, the Government in partnership with the Post Office is rendering payment services for social grants, water and electricity bills for more than 100 municipalities.
Ndala Mnisi, head of Consumer Services at the Post Office, said at the pre-launch ceremony that the Post Office constantly develops new services to meet the connectivity needs of the nation. The Post Office partners with government to provide services such as this, said Mnisi.
We are delighted to partner with the Post Office to facilitate the payment and issuing of motor vehicle licences, said Gauteng MEC for Roads and Transport, Mr Bheki Nkosi. He added with longer operating hours, opening on Saturday and some of them on Sundays, located within the communities and shopping malls, the Post Office becomes a strategic partner to the Department in ensuring accessibility of services. Motorists can now conveniently pay their motor vehicle licences and municipal bills at the Post Office at the same time. Motorists who renew licences at a post office immediately receive a valid licence disk and receipt.
MEC Bheki Nkosi will launch this partnership at an event to be held as follows:
Date : 30-07-2009
Time : 18h00

OUTCOME OF RESEARCH ON RESIDENTIAL ROBBERIES
Dr. Rudolph Zinn of the School of Criminal Justice at UNISA did intensive research on residential robberies and attacks, and interviewed many arrested and convicted robbers.
Some of his findings are alarming, some are surprising - but they are all well worth taking note of. Then make your own conclusion and beef up your security where necessary.
During the past year, house robberies increased by 13, 5%. Of the almost 15 000 residential robberies committed in 2008, half (50%) took place in Gauteng. The average age of a house robber is between 19 and 26 years. An average of 30% of all house robbers has either committed murder, or won't hesitate to commit murder. Only 17% of house robbers are foreigners. Of all arrested robbers, 90% had no matric or were unemployed. The 10%, who had been employed, gave up their jobs when confirming how much they could "earn" from a robbery.
Most victims or targets are affluent persons who openly display their wealth, e.g. expensive cars, jewellery, upmarket homes. Much intelligence is gathered about the target home and its residents by means of inside information supplied by domestic workers. 80% of residential robberies are committed with the help of information from domestic workers, gardeners and former employees. The robbers will monitor the home and movements for as long as is needed to formulate a plan of attack - sometimes up to two weeks.
All gangs research and monitor the response times of armed response companies. Most attacks occur between 19:00 and midnight as people is relaxed, busy cooking or watching TV, and the security systems and beams are not activated. But robberies continue until 04:00 in the morning. The biggest deterrent confirmed by robbers themselves, are small dogs that are kept inside the home. Alarm systems and armed reaction services are not considered a deterrent. Electric fences, closed-circuit TV (CCTV) and detection beams do, however, deter robbers.
An average of R5 000 is stolen during each robbery. Surprisingly, victims of house robberies are only seriously injured in 2% of all incidents. 35% of robbers robbed for basic needs (hunger, poverty), while 65% enjoyed the money and spent it on clothes, cars, etc. The average robber commits 103 robberies over seven years before being caught. A staggering 97% of all robbers are armed, and on average there are four members in an armed robbery gang. Most of the attackers reside a 10 to 30 minute drive from the target address. Women are more often tortured or hurt during house robberies. The conviction rate for house robberies in South Africa is only 7, 67%. In the USA it is 53%. While these statistics and facts may be disturbing, even alarming, it is trusted that it may sharpen the vigilance of each member. If you have safety measures at your home, ensure that they are in place. Test your security equipment regularly... never be complacent and think that it only happens to other people.
It is in your own best interest rather to be safe than sorry!

HI-JACKING WARNING NOTICE
SAPS Wierdabrug have requested through the CPF that the Public be warned of a group of 4 Black Adult Males wearing full SAPS and METRO Uniforms driving an unmarked box shaped Golf who are responsible for hi-jacking along the R55.
Their latest brazen escapade was the hi-jacking of a truck outside the SAPS Wierdabridge police station.
If stopped by any person reportedly being a policeman demand to see the ID Card ,Force Number badge and name which must be worn on their chest. The ID Card must be checked carefully for the tell tale photostat quality (and it must not be blank on the back).
If in doubt, travel to the nearest police station or garage and take note of details and descriptions and phone 10111 immediately or your local CPF Call Centre.
PLEASE NOTE: The SAP informed us that they do NOT use unmarked civilian vehicles with just a blue light on the roof in road blocks (which is what these hi-jackers are doing).
You are entitled to not stop for civilian unmarked cars, with civilian number plates, even if people in uniform try to wave you down to stop - since there is a very high likelyhood that they will be hi-jackers.
In such a case follow the advice in Louis' last paragraph above.
However, DON'T try this at a "real" road block with marked SAP vehicles, with SAP number plates.

What to do if you get a heart attack and you are on your own! (This might save your life!) (167 Kb PowerPoint)
|
STROKE RECOGNITION
Tell everyone about this.
The life you save might be your own!
|
|
During a Braai a friend stumbled and took a little fall - she assured everyone that she was fine (they offered to call paramedics) she replied she "just tripped over a brick because of her new shoes". They got her cleaned up and got her a new plate of food - while she appeared a bit shaken up, Ingrid went about enjoying herself the rest of the evening.
Ingrid's husband called later telling everyone that his wife had been taken to the hospital - (at 6:00pm, Ingrid passed away.) She had suffered a stroke at the Braai - had they known how to identify the signs of a stroke perhaps Ingrid would be with us today.
It only takes a minute to read this-
Recognizing a Stroke
A neurologist says that if he can see a stroke victim within 3 hours he can totally reverse the effects of a stroke...totally. He said the trick was getting a stroke recognized, diagnosed and getting the patient to a hospital within 3 hours - which is tough.
Sometimes symptoms of a stroke are difficult to identify and lack of awareness spells disaster. The stroke victim may suffer brain damage when people nearby fail to recognize the symptoms of a stroke.
READ AND LEARN THESE "3" STEPS:
Now doctors say a bystander can recognize a stroke by asking three simple questions:
1. *Ask the individual to SMILE.
2. *Ask him or her to RAISE BOTH ARMS.
3. *Ask the person to SPEAK A SIMPLE SENTENCE (Coherently) (i.e. ...It is sunny out today)
If he or she has ANY trouble with any of these tasks, call paramedics immediately and describe the symptoms to them.
After discovering that a group of non-medical volunteers could identify facial weakness, arm weakness and speech problems, researchers urged the general public to learn the three questions.
Widespread use of this test could result in a prompt diagnosis and treatment of the stroke and prevent brain damage from occuring.
If everyone who gets this e-mail sends it to 10 people, you can bet that at least one life will be saved in this way.
BE A FRIEND AND SHARE THIS ARTICLE WITH AS MANY FRIENDS AS POSSIBLE, you could save their lives.
In fact, the life you save might end up being your own!

Carpark scam could cost motorists dearly |
|
A new scam has emerged that is probably already making its rounds or about to spread viciously, so drivers need to be alert about the implications of a similar "chance" encounter.
By Trail Blazer
Most drivers have had the odd brush with a car or a person, a scrape here and a scratch there - nothing too serious to worry about or give second thought to.
And this is the very trait that scam artists are depending on to fleece you and the road accident fund.
Has this happened to you: you pull out of a driveway or shopping complex and find that someone "carelessly" walks into your car?
He may apologise, or if you offer to help him, he may refuse assistance and claim that he's okay. You glance at your car and notice nothing, not a dent nor even a scratch. He walks away from the car, usually in the opposite direction.
Well, take this advice seriously. Please go to the nearest police station and report your near "accident" or "encounter" if you prefer to call it that.
It will take up time, frustrate you and the officer taking down your report, and you wonder of what worth it is to report such an insignificant incident.
Well here's the payoff line.
Most people forget about it completely, until they receive a summons in their post box, or until the "victim" turns up at their door, claiming that he was so badly struck that he was in hospital for weeks with broken bones and requiring compensation from the MVA.
A lawyer will assist him to trace you, your address, and even bring him to your door.
The lawyer benefits from the scam with the fees he charges, the scam artist has someone working at the hospital who authenticates his claims and what happens to you?
First, you are in deep trouble for not having reported the "accident" within the 24 hours allowed.
Second, if you dispute the claim, it will go to court and you will have to spend thousands defending yourself.
Thirdly, and perhaps most frighteningly, the "victim" now has access to your home address and you are a ripe victim waiting to be picked for robbery, rape and even murder.
How did they know who to choose, when you believe it was a "chance" encounter?
Well, they time you while you are shopping at the mall and take down your number plate in advance.
Then they plan the "chance" encounter so that you don't think much of it and finally, they pounce into action, with massive MVA claims.
Please, for your own protection and the protection of your families, don't ignore even the slightest "encounter". Rather report it at the nearest police station and eliminate the need to worry as you would have done your civic duty, and avoided any future problems, foreseeable or not. |

Hi All
I was basically robbed yesterday in my complex by guys selling fake compost and charging a huge amount for it.
First there was only two guys who showed me a sample and asked me to open my gate so they could show me how it works, while I was talking to the guy a white truck with six more guys came and parked in front of my house.
I asked how much it was going to be and he said R12 a bag, so I said I wanted 10 bags, but while I was still telling him what I wanted they had already off loaded 43 bags onto my lawn and started raking it, this was done within four (4) minutes.
Just then my neighbour called me and told me that I should not buy from these guys because they were crooks but it was too late, but at least I managed to stop them half way. If I had let them carry on it would of cost me thousands of rands.
They stood there demanding their money and after I refused to pay them, they were getting violent and said that if I didn't pay them, they would drive their truck into my house or they will come back and sort me out. They were like animals and looked terrible. You could see that they were on drugs as well.
I have reported the incident to the crime intelligence department at the midrand police department, and an article will be going into the Midrand reporter.
I was told by friends that this as happened to many people in midrand and other areas, if this as happened to you, you can contact Captain Hulk on 083 309 3121.
There were 2 or 3 Indian guys a coloured guy and about 4 black guys.
The registration of the truck has the following details on it either 739 or 239 GP I cannot remember what the letters are.

112 Emergency Cell Services
The international GSM standard that allows for SIMless calling to your closest 112 control centre anywhere in the world - has been temporarily suspended in South Africa due to excessive abuse. (From May 2004).
This decision, allowed by ICASA, affects ALL GSM networks in South Africa.
In South Africa it is a punishable offence both to make hoax calls and to abuse any emergency service.
(Thanx to Litisha Richardson of Ward 64 for bringing this to our attention). |
112 SEL Nood Dienste

NEW CAR HIJACKING SCHEMES
1) Imagine: You walk across the parking lot, unlock your car and get inside. Then you lock all your doors, start the engine and shift into REVERSE.
Habit! You look into the rear-view window to back out of your parking space and you notice a piece of paper, some sort of advertisement stuck to your rear window.
So, you shift into PARK, unlock your doors and jump out of your vehicle to remove that paper (or whatever it is) that is obstructing your view... when you reach the back of your car, that is when the hijackers jump out of nowhere... jump into your car and take off -- your engine was running, your purse is in the car, and they practically mow you down as they speed off in your car.
BE AWARE OF THIS NEW SCHEME.
Just drive away and remove the paper that is stuck to your window later.
2) A new robbing tactic is fast spreading and I was nearly a victim!
Be alert on the highways!
I was on my way home at approx. 19h00 one evening from Lenmed Hospital, when a condom filled with a water resistant gel hit my windscreen.
It exploded on impact and the gel spread across the windscreen. I was curious at the time as to what the jelly was (suspecting it may have been a bird or the like) and thus drove to the next garage and had it cleaned.
Only then did it dawn on me what the intention was.
Thank goodness I did not wipe the windscreen.
The trick is this: instinctively a driver would switch the wipers on and try to wash the stuff off. Instead the goo is spread over the windscreen and blocks all vision, forcing you to stop. The wndscreen washer water does not dissolve the stuff.
THIS IS WHEN THEY ROB YOU!!!
Under no circumstances use the windscreen wipers.
Under no circumstances do you stop, even when the view is limited.
